Who is Augustus Reinhardt??

A lone grave near Rock Springs Road is the only known legacy of Augustus Reinhardt.  The stone is marked with a name, and a single date – January 14, 1802.  A search of early deeds reveals no Reinhardt families in the area.  A search of genealogy message boards turns up no Augustus Reinhardts in that time frame.   Any ideas??

More to come……

  1. AUGUSTUS WAS LIVING IN HILLSBOROUGH NC. HE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH WM FRANCIS NASH. AS A TAX COLLECTOR. COURT DOCUMENTS IN N C SHOW THAT NASH GOT IN TROUBLE FOR TAKING ILLEGAL “KICKBACKS”. THE SCAM WAS TO ASSESS A PROPERTY FOR MORE THAN IT WAS WORTH, AND WHEN THE OWNER COULD NT PAY THE TAXES, IT WAS TAKEN BY THE GOVT AND AUCTIONED OFF. AND THE PROCEEDS DIVIDED BY THE JUDGE, NASH AND AUGUSTUS. THE CITIZENS GATHERED TO HANG AUGUSTUS, AND ANOTHER MAN, THEY WERE PUT IN JAIL FOR THEIR OWN SAFTY. THAT NIGHT, THEY WERE LET LOOSE AND CAME TO OLD JEFFERSON, TN. NASH STAYED, WENT TO COURT AND WAS FOUND INNOCENT. HE HAD A SON BY A BARMAID WORKING AT THE LOCAL PUB. AND SHE NAMED HIM WM FRANCIS AFTER HIS FATHER. THEY NEVER MARRIED. THE YOUNG NASH, LEFT HILLSBOROUGH AT 13, MIGRATED TO CADES COVE, THEN TO THE CUMBERLAND GAP AND AT AGE 22 (1803) MOVED TO OLD JEFFERSON AND OPENED A STORE.
